thanks all, my problem has been solved!
the chkconfig --add alsasound did it.
i skipped the step in the instructions where it says to reboot into
the newly installed CCRMA kernel. so instead i finished configuring
alsa etc with the default redhat kernel (which i never choose at
startup).
i thought i'd save some time at the install as i knew this kernel
works on my pc =)
notes taken for next time!
