When this happens to me, I generally can use system monitor to list all
the running processes and then kill or end whatever is using the sound
card. I get this error frequently after a jack or ardour crash and find
that I then need to kill all the old jack processes which still seem to
be running. (I am using the RH 8.0 Bluecurve, but this also applies to
any system if you simply list all the running processes in a terminal
window.)
