Sounds like a misrouted interrupt line (just a guess, of course). I
assume things are not better if you start with acpi active.

A little bit higher, in some tests I did it was about 10mSecs or so.
This is obviously a 2.4.21 kernel problem (as the same alsa drivers work
with the RedHat kernel). 

I'm trying to build a newer kernel based on 2.4.22 (2.4.22-rc2 at this
point) but the acpi subsystem does not build cleanly. I'm waiting for a
newer version of acpi or a fix from the list (most probably today I'm
going to test a build without the acpi patches).
