Could you try to boot disabling acpi? That is the only major change in
what is included in the kernel. Edit /boot/grub/grub.conf and the end of
the "kernel /boot/vmlinuz..." lines that correspond to 2.4.20 add the
"acpi=off" option. 

If this is still a problem you could stay in 2.4.19 untill there is a
newer kernel. In that case I will build matching drivers so that you can
use the latest alsa.
