Bingo!

Duh....for an hour I did 'fdisk /dev/sda1' which was wrong because fdisk
doesn't talk to partitions, then for the next hour I did 'mount -vfat
/dev/sda /mnt/1394' which is wrong because you mount individual partitions!

Duh...

Thanks! It's working. Now to see if Ardour likes the drive...

I think it should be:
  mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/1394
You want to mount the first partition...
