[PlanetCCRMA] jackstart hanging the system

Trying further stuff...

I've rebooted the system, coming up this time with both the Oxygen 8 and
the UA-30 USB Audio interface hooked up.

- Playing a wave file with aplay does play through the UA-30.
- In a new development, my internal modem now is heard through the
built-in speakers.
- Starting up PD (without jack) tells me:

[jzitt@gimel jzitt]$ pd
reading startup file: /home/jzitt/.pdrc
couldn't open MIDI input device 1
couldn't open MIDI output device 1
opened 0 MIDI input device(s) and 0 MIDI output device(s).
Sample width set to 2 bytes

- Following a suggestion on the site, I unplug and replug in the Oxygen
8 while watching /var/log/messages as root. It tells me:

Dec 29 23:11:14 gimel gconfd (jzitt-2037): starting (version 1.0.9), pid
2037 user 'jzitt'
Dec 29 23:13:52 gimel kernel: usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 3, frame#

USB product 763/1015/120
Dec 29 23:14:17 gimel modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
sound-service-0-2

Looking in /etc/modules.conf, I don't find sound-service-0-2. Is this
significant? What would be looking for it? Should I put something
about it in that file, and if so, what?

Hmm... looking further in /etc/modules.conf, I notice this:

[root@gimel jzitt]# more /etc/modules.conf
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias usb-controller usb-uhci

# --- ALSA configuration
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias snd-card-0 snd-usb-audio
alias snd-card-1 snd-usb-audio
# --- OSS compatibility
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss
# --- Options
options snd device_gid=1 device_mode=0666 device_uid=0 cards_limit=2
major=116
options snd-usb-audio index=0,1 pid=0x0006,0x1015
# --- Keep modules from being autocleaned
add options -k snd-card-0
add options -k snd-card-1
# --- ALSA configuration END

Is it right that I have entries for both snd-card-0 and snd-card-1, both
aliases of (or aliased as?) snd-usb-audio? Could that be relevant to
this problem?
