[PhDs] Stanford Stipend increase for next year sucks...

Howdy everyone!

Just wanted to let you know the GSC released their report on grad student affordability, available here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KjRMmZwibxrH4UIu3sQxaGaUYBulxJWF/view

Here are the main recommendations:
[cid:8c01ea4e-16ec-41b2-9cf9-e419531327ff]

Feel free to mention this report/your affordance concerns with your advisors/profs (especially those who are on the academic senate), so that when this eventually makes its way over there for a vote, we'll hopefully have a few more advocates in the room.

Have a dope day!

Cheers,
Lloyd

Hi all,

This is Stanford-wide, not just the music department. The amounts are taken from the minimum salary tables posted online. Some departments may pay more than the minimum salary, but music pays the minimum.

Thanks for the suggestion Doga, the GSC is aware. I think I will also send a quick e-mail to Jarek.

Hope y'all are enjoying summer as well!
Mark

That does suck!! Thanks for noticing Mark (love the chart!). I’m on board if we wanted to escalate this and have a discussion about it with the admins!

Hope you’re all well and enjoying summer! <3

Hey Mark,

Great that you noticed this, is this a departmental thing or is this being applied more broadly across all PhD stipends?

In case anyone wants to get angry, I charted the stipend increase vs. inflation<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dcZ65WT7dyWk_MdgeVLtEPEOC_JnE3VjiE6QdRY92J0/edit?usp=sharing>. It is based on a 50% RA quarterly stipend. We are getting shafted next year, they only increased the stipends by 2% (as opposed to the typical ~4%). And this is especially bad since inflation for 2022 is sitting at 8.5% and was 7% in 2021 (when we had a 3.25% stipend increase, also bad).

Not sure if there is anyone we can bring this up to, but it's pretty bad. I also thought about adding in the average on-campus housing cost, but I don't have that data (and don't want to calculate it all, but I know it exists somewhere and is also bad).

Mark
