[PhDs] Unions

Hi Jack,

Thanks for bringing this up. My only knowledge of grad student unions comes from my sister (a grad student TA/RA) at UW in Seattle, who was actually quite surprised to hear we didn’t have one. She says she feels a huge sense of security and support from the union, especially in this time. I, however, know basically nothing else but would love to be kept in the loop if anyone else hears of mutterings as well.

This might be a good moment in time to put pressure on the university while they are in a hard place and when they might make some decisions which are upsetting to many of the grad students. I know that at UC Berkeley it is mandatory to be a member of the union, even if you are an undergraduate just doing grading for a class (I was in that situation once). Maybe their precedent or some other could be used as a model.
