> Hello, MSTs!
>
> We understand that some of you may be interested in (re)applying to the PhD program at CCRMA in Computer-Based Music Theory and Acoustics.
>
> 1. To apply to the PhD program as an existing MST Master's student, you MUST use the GRADUATE AUTHORIZATION PETITION (a.k.a. “grad auth) that is found online in Axess.
> https://registrar.stanford.edu/students/graduate-degree-progress/graduate-program-authorization-petition <https://registrar.stanford.edu/students/graduate-degree-progress/graduate-program-authorization-petition>
>
> Do Not, I repeat, DO NOT file a new application through CollegeNet’s ApplyNet online!
>
> Please note that all supplementary graduate application items are due in the Music office PRIOR to the December holiday break. All applications are due by the second Tuesday in December; all supplementary items (i.e. letters from referees, transcripts, SOP, etc.) are to be postmarked no later than the second Tuesday in December.
>
> 2. File the online petition after submitting all application materials to me in the Braun Music office (Rm 101) and AFTER you hear the decision about whether or not you will be admitted to the PhD program (late February, early March next year). Note that as soon as you file the grad auth petition online, the Registrar will charge you $125 for processing the petition, REGARDLESS OF THE OUTCOME of your application to the PhD program at CCRMA. Therefore, it would be wise to provide all supplementary items prior to filing the online petition, WHEN and IF you are admitted into the program!
>
> 3. You must provide a new "Statement of Purpose" (a.k.a. “SOP”) and you are welcome to provide additional Letter(s) of Recommendation. [N.B. Your previous application to Stanford that we have on file still contains the original letters of recommendation and we can use these (or not, your choice) for review for the PhD program.] You do not need to resubmit GRE or TOEFL scores if you provided them when you applied to the MA.
>
> 4. Do I get TOEFL waived? https://gradadmissions.stanford.edu/about/frequently-asked-questions/gre-and-toefl <https://gradadmissions.stanford.edu/about/frequently-asked-questions/gre-and-toefl>
>
> 5. Can I get a recommendation letter from the Music Department?
> You should provide at least 3 letters of reference and I would strongly advise you not to have a letter from one of CCRMA's ACTFac (tenure-track or tenured professors = Assistant, Associate, and full Professors) as they will be thevery same instructors who will be reviewing your application!
>
> 6. Checklist of items we need to have for a (re)application to the PhD program are the very same items we needed when you applied to the MST (or PhD) program (see below). NOTE: You may use all, some, or none of the items you originally filed, but you MUST let me know that you are interested in applying to the PhD program and, again, I urge you to rewrite your SOP to make it pertinent to this new application.
>
> * SOP
> * 3 letters of recommendation:
> * Two transcripts from each school attended for at least one year (total)
> * GRE scores (from exam taken within the past 3 years)
> * TOEFL scores if English is not your primary language and you do not meet the requirements explained on the Graduate Admissions website for waiver of this requirement (see #4, above)
> *Writing samples demonstrating scholarly ability
>
> Finally: any questions? Please come see me!
>
> Thanks!
> Debbie
