> Hi CCRMA folks,
>
> My name’s Daniel Jackson, and I’m a PhD student in Theater and Performance Studies. Part of our curriculum is a production in our second year, and I’m working on a production of Heiner Muller’s Quartet. The text is a re-imagining of the novel Dangerous Liaisons. For the production, I’m building a system integrating Google’s MediaPipe and the Unity game engine to do real-time motion capture (live digital puppetry, essentially). I’m looking for a few folks to join the team. If you’re interested, you can email me at dnjack at stanford.edu <mailto:dnjack at stanford.edu> (and if you’re not interested but you know someone who would be, please send this along to them!).
>
> The text of Quartet is quite dark, but I’m thinking of it as a jumping-off point for generating performance than as something we have to be faithful to.
>
> Right now the plan is to have rehearsal/development meetings starting in November, more concentrated rehearsals the first few weeks of Winter quarter, with the show running for one weekend in early February (tentatively February 9th and 10th).
>
> Here are the two positions I’m specifically looking for, but if this sounds like an interesting project I’m open to all sorts of collaboration:
>
> Sound Designer
> Ideally this is someone who is interested in live sound reinforcement (amplifying and manipulating the performers’ microphones) and playing around with interactive live sound. My initial thought was someone who’s comfortable with Ableton Live, but whatever system and software you want to use is fine. I can check to see the specifics of what equipment we have access to, but it’s a pretty standard theatrical setup. I would love for this person to be able to attend rehearsals so that the sound can become an integral part of the performance rather than an overlay at the end of the process. This could be an opportunity for someone who’s interested in exploring the relationship between bodies and electronically manipulated voices in space, but also a simpler system that is more traditional theatrical sound design.
>
> Technology Lead
> Ideally this would be someone with some programming experience who can help manage some of the DIY computer systems we would be using for the show and is interested in 3D modeling and video game engines. I’m working on building the digital puppetry system, and will continue working on it, but it would be great to have someone who can keep an eye on things and continue development while I switch gears a little bit to focus on performers. Right now the system is using MediaPipe and Unity, using Python for the MediaPipe stuff.
>
> If you don’t feel like emailing me, but want to learn more, we’re having an information session (and auditions) for my project and two others on Monday, October 17th at 5:30 PM at the Nitery Theater in Old Union. I’ve included the information for that info session below, but you needn’t be there to get involved!

> ABOUT THE PROJECTS:
> Emily Waters - Untitled (TBD)
> “My great-grandmama told my grandma the part she lived through that my grandma didn't live through and my grandma told my mama what they both didn't live through and my mama told me.” — Gayl Jones I am crafting a solo show and biomythography that uses poetry, monologue, and video art installation to respond to and dream alongside a Black Maternal archive of contemporary poetry, inspired by the words of poets such as Gwendolyn Brooks, Nicki Giovanni, and Lucille Clifton, Lynn Thompson and Joshua Bennet. Jennifer C. Nash’s recent text, Birthing Black Mothers provides a key theoretical context for this performance piece, inspired by her drive to “probe the kinds of Black maternal affects and performance of Black motherhood that are cast as politically generative as well as those that are too often dismissed or concealed.” This show is rooted in the intersections of Theatrical Jazz, Black feminist improv, healing justice, meditations on memory, and inherited stories of trauma and survival. I am currently looking for collaborators and co-conspirators in the roles of costume designer and lighting design.

> Daniel Jackson - Heiner Muller’s Quartet
> Quartet uses two live performers who control digital avatars to re-enact the plot of the novel Dangerous Liaisons. It portrays the final days of a debauched, decadent aristocracy playing games of seduction from their underground bunkers while the world around them falls apart. The work is especially suited to performers who are interested in physical performance, motion capture, and full body puppetry. Performers who want to participate generatively in the development of the performance are particularly welcome. I’m looking for two performers, an assistant director, and other collaborators.

> Karishma Bhagani - The Make Up Album (Working Title)
> Inspired by Riz Ahmed’s The Breakup Album, I am working on conceiving a new piece called The Make Up Album, alongside my colleague and writing collaborator, Aleya Kassam. This will be a one woman show that will discuss themes and issues related specifically to the experience of a South Asian Kenyan woman, living in the diaspora. At present Aleya has a writing and research based on a series of different themes and topics that are specific to the Kenyan Indian experience. Some of these include (but are not limited to), the stories and songs that traveled along the seas, the adaptations of specific Indian foods and textiles within Kenyan culture (kikoy art, parathas, and their evolution into chapatis), as well as a detailed exploration of female sexuality that transcends generations of Indian women in Africa.
