Thanks for the suggestions.  I fixed the title.
*current-function* was its original name, but I
decided "current-" was just noise.  I agree that
*function* should be more consistent.  It sort of
grew in the telling.  Maybe some great idea will
come to me.

Also, the earlier optimizer bug should be fixed now.
(I was inadvertently using an internal temporary
list as a variable's value).
