I think this works now, at least for the simplest use (top-level,
not reverted etc).  Not too bad -- ca 500 lines, and I didn't
have to use xxd and arrays of ints -- why did I think that
strings (of chars) only worked in C++?  The eq? -> eqv?
stuff is still incomplete -- will continue to poke at it.
