I used "scaler" decades ago because I didn't like the spelling "scalar". According to the OED, "scalar" goes back to the 17th century, and derives from "scala", a ladder, ultimately from Latin. "scaler" is also old, and refers to one who scales a mountain or a fish. Well, I still like "scaler" better! "gain" looks like an escapee from the EE lab. "volume" is too specific. Maybe "scl" or "*"?
