[CM] Grace failing at start

hi all,
i have been trying the tarball of Grace this morning, and have been
able to get it to compile (on Fedora 8) without problem. when i start
grace, i get this error:

Error: unbound variable: make-hash-table

        Call history:

        ChickenBridge.scm: 249  ##sys#register-macro
        ChickenBridge.scm: 256  make-hash-table

what am i doing wrong? my chicken version is 3.3.
