High and Low Tech Telematic Music: The Telematic Circle and the Virtual
Sound Exchange

A Report from Pauline Oliveros April 11 2008

CCRMA, STANFORD UNIVERSITY • DEEP LISTENING INSTITUTE, Ltd.
CCRMT, MCGILL UNIVERSITY • iEAR, RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE
VistaMuse, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO

The Telematic Circle formed in 2007 is an interest group that uses and
develops applications for telepresent music performances. The group supports
the creation of new art that specifically addresses broadband transmission
systems as a new medium.

The interest of the Telematic Circle goes beyond the requirements of
mono-located music performances, for example musical solutions that address
the unavoidable latency between two co-located sites.

Technical developments are also supported, with an extended interest in
issues that are not addressed in typical speech conference systems. Among
these goals are the development of systems with ultra-low latency,
sufficient bandwidth to allow immersive multiple communication channels, and
accurate spatial reproduction.

Each institution represented in the TC has participated in multi-site
concerts over the INTERNET. Institutions interested in participating in the
ongoing research, rehearsals, jam sessions and concerts for the continual
improvement of the telematic experience are welcome to join.

Significant music making has occurred with both high tech multi-channel CD
quality audio and DV quality video and low tech audio and video
transmissions using iCHATav, SKYPE and other applications.

Institutions wishing to join in this research should have an INTERNET2
connection. TC will provide the consultation to establish connection. Check
out http://ccrma.stanford.edu/groups/soundwire/ for instructions.

Each institution has significant input to offer to the continual development
of this project. By working together we can create an excellent and strong
network of expertise in music, software, hardware and performance venue
development that is unparalleled.

The Virtual Sound Exchange http://virtualsoundexchange.net is a project of
the Deep Listening Institute, Ltd.

The Virtual Sound Exchange helpline provides up-to-date information to
musicians on how to establish telematic music connections with musicians
throughout the world. Telematic music allows musicians to play live and
simultaneously across geographic distance via the internet. Expert advice is
available on freeware and shareware applications that can be used for
telematic music. A database of musicians is also facilitated through this
site for musicians seeking to join telematic ensembles.

The information on this site is intended to:

   1. Provide telematic music technology consultation for musicians
   2. Serve as a resource for up-to-date information on telematic music
freeware and shareware applications
   3. Enable the creation of new ensembles, rehearsals, performances, and
information exchanges that can lead to live, virtual or mixed reality
performances.

The Virtual Sound Exchange helpline project grew from the research for and
implementation of the Deep Listening Convergence 2007. Deep Listening
Institute, Ltd. with technical direction by Scot Gresham-Lancaster
established a helpline and suite of applications to support forty-five
musicians from Europe Canada, and across the USA in a successful virtual
online six-month residency culminating in four in-person concerts in upstate
New York June 8-11, 2007.

Virtual Sound Exchange will continue to update and add new applications as
they become available. Participation is welcome and will be logged in a
database.

particle itself but all the quantum information about the particle."
